Why Do Americans Think the English Have Bad Teeth?
Really, I’ve seen very few people with bad teeth in this country and, from what I’ve seen, other countries seem to be fairly similar in the appearance of their teeth. Me and a friend had a few theories on it, such as the lack of affordable dental care in the UK until recent decades, and the fact that plastic surgery and other methods of appearance alteration seem to be much more accepted in America. We just wondered what others thoughts were and if an American could possibly fill us in on the why.
Whilst I know that not all Americans take it seriously, I’ve noticed that quite a few of the people I’ve met do… I don’t normally mind stereotypes because, let’s face it, every country has them, but I just find that particular one rather insulting. Hey, we can’t complain though, like a few have pointed out, our stereotypes about you aren’t always 100% pleasant either.
According to the World Health Organization, British people have the healthiest teeth in the World.
My personal opinion is that American’s point of reference is movies like Austin Powers.
Look at photo’s of British Celebrities, %99 have teeth just as White as anyone else, but it’s a stereotype that is no longer true.
50 years ago, British people did have pretty bad teeth, in the same way that today, Americans have an obesity problem, but these things come and go.
Its the same as to why the world thinks all Yanks are fat, oh wait they are.
It’s just another stereotype, like so many others. Before the internet and such, different people couldn’t really know about each other, except by what they heard. No one truly 100% in America believes that. I don’t know. Why does the world think all Americans are Hollywood look-a-like blond dumb asses with big boobs that spend their days on the beach? or fat old white balding rich men? Because that’s what people see on t.v. and read in books. It’s just part of a joke now, it’s not an actually accepted "trait" for people in the UK.
hey, your right America’s the fattest country, but that doesn’t mean all Americans are…perfect example of a stereotype. It’s not the stereotypes are false, they’re just over emphasized.
I have no idea at all becuase I have never heard that. If I were to hear someone say that then I would think they were crazy. Anybody can have bad teeth. I don’t like stereotypes I think they are stupid, most of them are not true.

they know that britons do avoid the bathroom as much as possible so it is natural to think that they do not brush teeth either
