Liposuction Article for R Mag

Liposuction is one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed in the UK. The technique was first performed in France over 30 years ago and is now often performed under twilight anaesthesia. The technique involves removal of fatty tissue under the skin through hollow suction tubes.

I often see patients for consultations about liposuction at the Gatehouse Clinic in Northampton. These are a selection of commonly asked questions.

How is the fat removed?

A number of small incisions are made around the area of intended liposuction. Sterile fluid is then infiltrated into the area to help dissolve the fatty tissue. Fine hollow suction canola are then placed in the tissue and the fat removed.

What is tumescent liposuction?

This is liposuction in which fluid is infiltrated into the area before liposuction takes place. This helps dissolve the fatty tissue making it easier to remove. It also reduces bruising speeds post-operative recovery.

Who is suitable for liposuction?

Liposuction is generally used to remove localised areas of fat. Despite weight loss and exercise many people find it difficult to reduce stubborn areas of fat. Liposuction is ideal for these areas but is not a solution if you are very overweight.

How much fat is removed?

This depends on the individual and the area. Up to 12 lbs of tissue can safely be removed at a time.

What areas can be treated?

The most commonly treated areas in women are the tummy, hip, knees and inner and outer thighs. Men typically develop fatty deposits on the front of the abdomen and neck regions.

Does liposuction help cellulite?

No. Liposuction removes the deeper fat and cellulite is formed near the surface. Treatments such as Endermologie and Mesotherapy are specifically designed to treat cellulite. You will be able to discuss which treatment is best suited to you during your complementary consultation at the Gatehouse Clinic.

How long will it take me to recover?

This varies between individuals, the areas treated and the amount of fat removed. Some patients are back to relatively normal activities within a week. If more fatty tissue has been removed it is likely recovery will take slightly longer.

For the first 2-3 weeks following treatment you will be fitted with a support garment. This applies gentle pressure to the treated areas helping reduce bruising and speed the resolution of swelling.

Liposuction is a commonly performed and successful procedure. However it is not suitable for everyone. If you are considering treatment please contact Mr Richards’s office to obtain an information pack or arrange your complementary consultation.
